Melanotan II was developed originally as potential preventative treatments for various forms of skin cancer. It was thought that by artificially stimulating the internal tanning process among members of the population that were at high risk to develop skin cancer due to sun exposure that one may be able to lower the chances of these individuals from developing the disease later in life. Along with the benefits of providing a tan without the need for extensive exposure to sunlight as well as improved sexual performance and/or desire, Melanotan II also may help to decrease the appetite via targeting an appetite-suppression receptor in the brain. This effect is not an overwhelming one but is noticeable for the majority of users and desirable for many. The duration of the tanning effect of the drug once a user ceases administering it will once again depend on several factors. The majority of users however will notice that the tan achieved with the drug will fade and become unnoticeable within four to eight weeks after ceasing the administration of the drug. For most individuals, during the loading phase with the hormone, a range of between 0.015 to 0.02 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per injection should be sufficient. These injections would take place anywhere from twice daily to as infrequently as once every other day or longer. For the maintenance phase many individuals will find that a dose of approximately 0.01 milligrams per kilogram of body weight administered once every few days should be sufficient to maintain the effects of the hormone.
A few synthetic analogues of α-MSH have been investigated for their apparent photoprotective effects against ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, namely Melanotan (afamelanotide) and Melanotan II, referred to as Melanotan 2. Bremelanotide, another analogue of α-MSH similar to Melanotan 2, is currently under development for the treatment of sexual dysfunction. All of these melanotan peptides have significantly greater potencies than α-MSH, but with distinctive selectivity peptide profiles
Lasting Tan: Even if dosage is stopped, a warm sun-kissed tan can last for months at a time without any exposure to the sun. Conversely, tans developed naturally fade in around a months time.
Flexibility of Use: Able to take a small loading dose with continued dosing until desired skin pigmentation is achieved. Once achieved only need to dose once every couple of weeks to maintain same pigment.
Reduced exposure to sunlight (UV rays): Melanotan still needs exposure to sunlight to be effective. However it will allow the user a significant reduction in time to develop desired tan .
Melanotan II can have appetite suppressive effects, but rarely to a degree providing either a problem for bulking or much of an aid for dieting. Where hair is light colored MT-II use can darken it, though the effect on hair is much less than on the skin and generally is unnoticed. It's also possible for feelings of nausea, light-headedness, or tiredness to occur. Any of these undesired effects, if occurring, will clear quickly. Increased growth, increased number, or hyperpigmentation of moles may occur. These side effects, if they occur, may last for a substantial period of time or even be permanent. Accordingly, effect on moles should be monitored.
